Many thanks to Beyond Awareness for answering this interview - for sharing their insights, stories, and more.

About the Band

Beyond Awareness is a 4-man modern metal band. Their captivating sound is a combination of heavy modern metal riffs, energetic drumming, emotional melodies and a voice that delivers the highs of the 80s and the growls of modern metal.

The band was formed in the promised land of heavy metal, Finland, in the city of Tampere in 2013. After multiple changes the band found its key members and the lineup was finalized. The year 2019 was a crucial turning point for the band. It was the year when the band decided to reinvent themselves and ascend to a higher level both musically and aesthetically. Instead of focusing solely on songwriting, the band as a whole was to be affected.

Every live show and every new song contain something new and interesting, and their number one priority is to continuously modernize and create something that the music industry has never heard before. Having found their own unique sound, the right members and the mutual love for music, the plan to bring their music to each and every fan across the globe has begun.

How did you come up with your band name?

We had  many brainstorming sessions and a few good names for the band, but they were all taken. We wanted an unique name, which sounded like us.

How did you guys get together as a band?

The band was formed way back in 2013 by Miika and Ville (who was the guitarist at that time). They quickly gathered a drummer, bassist and a singer. After many lineup changes and one EP later, the band had found its key members.

Miika, Joonas and Jani had known each other many years prior to the bands forming. Each of them had a burning passion to make music as a band, since they had a decent background in music already. Jere joined the band, as the other members were awestruck by his abilities as a singer.

Can you tell us more about your latest album, Dissonance? Is there any recurring theme you purposely put into the album? Your influences in this album?

’’Dissonance’’ was a deliberate effort to rid ourselves from our past image of a rock band. The EP is a clear step towards modern metal, with tracks such as ’’Sinverted’’ and ’’Reset Me’’. Thematically the EP ranges from heartbreak to pro-humanity, so there are a wide array of subjects to be found within.

Congrats on 50,000 streams on Sinverted last November 2019! Can you tell us more about this?

’’Sinverted’’ had the main riff as an idea for a long time, and we knew it had that magic potential to be an absolute banger! We worked on the C-part for quite some time, we had some ideas for it, but none of them sounded right. Then one day Miika had a bright idea to make it a mosh-part. And let me tell you, people go nuts when they hear it in a live setting!

Can you tell us more about your background as musicians?

Miika: It started, when I was about 12 years old. I began idolizing guitarists such as Alexi Laiho. That gave me the fuel to start learning the guitar, and after some time I began composing my own songs. Suddenly I realized, that people might like my songs, and I should deliver.

Jani: I had many musical influences way back in elementary school, partly from friends around me. The spark to make music began there, and a dream to be in a band strated formulating in my mind gradually. With a lot of hard work and a’’ one lucky break’’ later, I am finally in a serious and goal-oriented band. And finally I’d like to add, that music has always been with me, from the beginnings to this day.

Joonas: My main instrument has always been the drums. I love that there’s always something new to learn and something new to be inspired by. I don’t want sound as a cliche, but music is my life. The first thing I do when I wake up is I put some music playing in the background. Everywhere I go, I have my headphones on, so the music never stops. I have played in many different schoolbands every since I was in elementary school, and prior to Beyond Awareness I had a technical death metal band, from which I learned tons.

Jere: I have enjoyed singing my whole life. I got into metal music in my early teenage years. At the age of 16, I formed a band called Nite Ride with my friends, me as the bass player. We needed a singer, and lucky for me I literally got the shortest straw. Since then, I’ve been dreaming about success in the music business. It used to be just sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Now, after all that, I really mean business.

How do you guys write songs? Where do you get your inspiration from?

Miika is the primary songwriter in the band, so he writes the majority of our songs. I (Miika) have over ten years of experience writing songs, so I am quite confident in my skills. My ways of working on songs varies. In the early days, I had a few good riffs, which would then turn into songs. Nowadays, I try to visualize the structure of the song, and how it should sound, before I do anything else. When I have a decent demo of the song, I bring it to the band for further development. Things that inspire me as a songwriter are certain moods, current lifestyle or hearing a good song.

Can you recall your earliest memory about music? That one thing that made you want to be an artist / musician?

For me (Joonas), my earliest memory of wanting to be a musician is when I was in 3rd grade. We had a music class, and in there I saw the drumset. I just had to go and bang away at it. I had never played before in my life, but it sure felt good. Shortly after, my classmate took the drumsticks and played a basic rock beat. Needless to say, I was sold.

Whats the best thing and about being in the studio and making music?

Best thing when we are making music is our ability to reinvent ourselves musically. It is our plan to sound different on every new release. Nowadays you can do wonders with just your instruments and a computer, so the traditional ’’trip to the studio’’ isn’t our thing anymore. Sure, the mixing and mastering will be left to the professionals at the studio, but the actual recording process feels quite natural and stress-free with our current way of doing this.

Can you describe your best gig so far?

Best gig for me (Joonas) was, when we won our local bandbattle. Our setlist was full of bangers, we had props on the stage, we painted our faces, we had preparty, people were stoked and full of energy just waiting for us to start. Right away when the first notes were played, I knew we would win the whole thing. That night was memorable.

Most memorable, weird, interesting, or funny thing that ever happened to you as a band?

We had this gig at at lakehouse. We played by a pool, and everyone was jumping in and throwing each other in there. Water splashing everywhere while we blasted our songs! Of course we had an awesome afterparty: bbq, sauna and a great bunch of happy people.

If each one of you were a fruit, what would you be and why?

Jani would be a banana, because he wants to be in someone’s ass. Miika would be an orange, because he has developed an appetite for them lately. Jere would be a kiwi, because kiwis are hairy and so is Jere. Joonas would be a miracle fruit, because he can turn a sour situation to a sweet one.
