What does your name Stygian Creations mean?

Stygian is a oldish synonym to dark and infernal. So our name translates to ‘Creations of Darkness’.

How did you guys meet? What made you guys want to be in a band with each other?

Our band was originally formed around 2010 so we’ll have ten year anniversary this year. We started as a trio and then we found our bass player Sampsa who alongside Niilo, the  guitar player and main songwriter are only one left from the original lineup. Later on in 2012 we found Eetu, who sang on our debut ‘Shades’ EP and still remains as our vocalist. After that we got new drummer Jonne, who’s playing on upcoming albums. Currently we have our friend as a session guitar player. Why we want to play together? Well, probably because we have fun times while sweating together at rehearsal place and shouting at each other.

How do you go about songwriting? Where do you find ideas? And what things do you consider when composing a song?

In early days we used to play more a more melodic type of death metal but eventually we started listening to more aggressive bands and genres such as Black Metal which has radically influenced our newer material. However, our main goal is to keep catchy melodies in our songs no matter how much blast beats and tremolo picking madness we have in them.

Can you tell us more about your EP Shades? How did you go about creating and recording them?

Shades was recorded 2013 with only one guitarist and it naturally caused some writing boundaries. That EP already has vibes that we were slowly going away from the melodeath scene into more aggressive riffs. We were teens back then and it can be heard.

Can you recall your earliest memory about music? That one thing that made you want to be an artist / musician?

As the guitarist and songwriter of our band I’ll probably answer this myself. I started listening to rock and metal in primary school and playing guitar on the sixth grade and I’ve always been really afraid of playing in front of audience, but alongside other shy guys it doesn’t feel that scary. We can all agree that with a good group full of friends it’s fun to achieve and create awesome music.

Can you describe your best gig so far?

Probably our hometown “Comeback” gig two years ago or at the same place with Tomb of Finland and Amputory year ago.

Most memorable/bizarre/interesting/funny thing that ever happened during a gig?

Well, our drum n bass section has strong tendencies to destroy something or do parkour during gigs.

What’s the best thing about playing live?

It’s awesome to play our own music in front of an audience and it’s even better if someone likes it.

Can you describe the metal scene in Finland? Just how metal is Finland?

Everyone knows someone who plays in a band. And you always know someone who plays in those bands from a mutual friend or two. For example our hometown Hyvinkää has around 60 bands and half of them are black metal. Everyone knows someone who’s playing in those bands and new projects show up all the time. It’s also openly weird to play in basic Rock’n’Roll band but normal to play Black Metal.

Tell us something most people don't know about you guys as a band?

We hate each other but we hate you even more.

Most weird, interesting, or funny thing that ever happened to you guys as a band?

Our drummer got stuck in a vacuum cleaner once.

For fun : If each one in the band were a fruit, what would they be and why?

Our drummer is a banana, just because.

Our bass player and guitarist are plums because they love slavic brandy.

Our singer is lemon, because he has heartburns all the time.
