Many thanks to Unknown Decoy for this interview! In the interview below, the band shares interesting experiences during gigs, making music videos, and stuff. But mostly gigs! Whether a big crowd or a small crowd, playing live is always fun!

Can you tell us more about your band name? Unknown Decoy?
The name ”Unknown Decoy” comes from a thought that as a band we are something weird and fascinating same time, and you can never know what you’ll face next when you listen to our music.

How did you guys meet and form the band? How long have you been working together, and how's it been?
Our band is based on our high school cover band many years ago, but officially we started with this name in 2015. Back then we had two guitarists and a different drummer, but other guitarist Tatu and the drummer Patrik left the band in 2018. Saku got Patrik’s place and we became a trio. Tatu and Patrik left because of their own life situations, no drama was included.

Can you tell us more about the music video, Davaj? Playing inside a van and literally falling into a ditch in the farm  - and ending up in the middle of a snow storm?
Well that was basically a good description of the video.  The van was the same van that was used in a Finnish movie ”Heavy Trip”, Lada was of course necessary thing to get on the video, and a Finnish wintry landscape fit perfectly to the context. We were freezing to death, though...

Aside from Black Sabbath, System Of A Down, Motörhead, who else would you consider your influence? What other music genres or artists do you get ideas from, when experimenting with your music?
We can get ideas from any band coming to our minds while writing songs, and each of us has different bands as an inspirational source. That’s why our songs have some little influences from everywhere. Hard Rock and Punk influences like Ozzy Osbourne and Offspring come from the singer /bassist Aaro, the drummer Saku likes to add some Avenged Sevenfold and Muse into our songs and the guitarist Vilho likes everything which sounds black and doomy. Rage Against the Machine and Slipknot are also often mentioned during our songwriting sessions.

Can you describe your best gig so far?
We guess our most epic gig could be Kiukkurock 2018. It was a little private event somewhere near Tampere, and we played so late in the night that people were having an incredible party feeling and they came straight from a sauna to moshpit wearing nothing but towels. Small gigs with perfect feeling can sometimes beat even the biggest gigs.

Whats the best thing about playing live? Did you ever get nervous?
There is always a small amount of nervous excitement in our asses when we are going to stage, but I think it’s just the thing that makes playing live feel so good. It’s the best feeling ever when you can throw your own songs straight into the audience’s faces and see them enjoy it.

Whats the most memorable (dangerous, weird, inspiring, or funny) thing that ever happened to you guys as a band?
Well this is a hard one... it feels like there’s always something weird going on when we are doing something with the band. Maybe the best one was a case when we were in ”Sounds” band competition at Saimaa Stadiumi in Mikkeli waiting for our turn behind the stage. We were the last band and the band before us was currently playing on stage, so we were the only people behind the stage at the moment. Then suddenly a Finnish rap artist Paleface walked behind the stage and stumbled over an electric power cable so lights went out and there was no electricity on the stage. Paleface looked quickly around and walked away fast and soon some crew members ran behind the stage to fix the cable and we were just watching there and wondering what the hell just happened.

What are your plans as a band?
Our plan is to conquer the whole world, of course.

One interesting fact about each one of your band members?
Some interesting fact about each of us: Aaro has been watching birds as a hobby for fifteen years. Vilho is the nerd one who does all the computer stuff in this band. Saku’s ass was in a surprisingly big role in Grease musical performed in Jyväskylä.

If your band members were a fruit, what would you each be and why?
This band as fruits would be: Aaro is a kiwi because it is furry outside and has green thoughts inside. Vilho is a pineapple because it is slow to eat and Vilho is slow. Saku is a banana because when you think about it, a banana is a very weird fruit when you look at it, but when you open it and see what’s there inside you’ll notice that it is as weird as you supposed it to be.
