About the Band

Death Mex plays metal that honours the 80s thrash scene while adding tasty spices with progressive song structures, raging speed and attitude, groovy riffs and catchy melodies.

Where does your name Death Mex come from?

The name originates from a misheard conversation when we were talking about mexican death metal which our friend fittingly morphed into Death Mex. The name itself has no meaning other than that.

When did you get together as a band, and how did you guys find each other? What made you guys want to play music with each other?

We founded the band in 2012 after secondary school. Our original members were at the same music class and were the only ones interested in metal so we got together soon after. The line-up changed quickly and Timo (rhythm guitar) and Jaakko (drums) joined via a mutual friend. Bassists have changed many times but Jouni we found from the internet.

Can you tell us more about your latest EP / Demo, Etheromania?

Etheromania was supposed to be a demo because we hadn't released music in a couple years. It took way too long to release so it turned into an interesting affair. It doesn't really show any progressive elements we nowadays add to our music and is rather punk/thrash influenced. Next time we'll be prepared better.

How did you start playing music? Can you tell us more about you guys musicians?

Jaakko is a multi-instrumentalist from a music conservatory, Jouni is all over the place in many bands and his showmanship is off the charts, others (Pauli, Timo & Peter) just loved music and started playing without any real background.

How do you write songs? What is the usual theme of your songs?

Musically we all partake in songwriting. Everyone shows some ideas and the best ones are then developed further. Themes are usually just something personal, deep frustration in certain things in the world. Sometimes there are stories about real life events.

What does music and being an artist mean to you?

Music is the flatulence gas of our relieved minds. Being an artist is filled with self-criticism and doubt but usually the end result is rewarding!

Can you recall your earliest memory about music? That one thing that made you want to play / create music?

We were all young and curious. Music was present in all of our homes and it was easy to pick up.

Whats the best thing about playing live?

Best in playing live is the rush of adrenaline and the sense of community. Songs usually sound better live and that feels good.

Can you describe your best gig so far? Most interesting venue you ever played in?

Our most memorable gig was definitely at Möysän Musaklubi, opening for Profane Omen with Finntroll and Megahammer. Loud, proud and BIG! Lots of people, lots of sweat.

Most weird, interesting, or funny thing that ever happened to you as a band?

We were asked to perform a shit gig at a shithole getting paid 20 euros. It resulted us getting a new shit gig in a different shithole getting paid 25 euros. Worth it!

If each one of you were a fruit, what would you be and why?

Fruits? Jouni is a Shortest Strawberry - always existing but never there, Timo is impeachment because "practice what you peach", Peter is kiwi because he's hairy and sour, Jaakko is a fractal cabbage with no straight lines, Pauli is a painapple because he is in Spain (the 'S' is silent).
