Surrealist imagery, at its basic, is outlandish, perplexing, and even uncanny, as it is meant to jolt the viewer out of their comforting assumptions. Disdaining rationalism and literary realism, artists painted the "everyday rational world" with unnerving, illogical scenes - with photographic precision. They also created created strange creatures from everyday objects, and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself. Artists in this art movement include Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and more. The video below explains it quite well:
In music videos, surrealist art was used in Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" with the odd-looking people in Suburbia doing odd things, as well as Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" contain some abstract or disturbing imagery, and Creed with "My Sacrifice" where normal people are depicted to be living normal lives in a sinking city. Even David Bowies last masterpiece, "Blackstar" depicting the last days of his life and his heart revealed in mysterious lyrics and imagery. It can also be as simple as a woman wearing a horse-mask in "Horse" by Tomska, or "Fireworks" from the heart by Katy Perry.
